PEMF: what pulsed electromagnetic fields are

PEMF is an acronym you come across more and more often in the world of wellbeing and sports recovery. It stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field. Let’s look at what pulsed electromagnetic fields are, how they work and why they pair well with the warmth of far infrared.

What pulsed electromagnetic fields are

A PEMF device contains coils that, when current flows through them, generate short magnetic pulses. These pulses pass through the body without producing heat and without any electrical contact with the skin: there are no shocks or tingling, and most people feel nothing at all.

The number of pulses per second is called the frequency and is measured in hertz (Hz). Wellness devices use low intensities, very far from those of MRI scanners.

Where it comes from

Magnetic therapy has been used for decades in rehabilitation and physiotherapy. In recent years the technology has become more compact and has found its way into mats, belts and devices for personal and professional wellbeing.

What it is used for in wellbeing

  • Relaxation: it is used to encourage a general feeling of ease.
  • Muscles: it helps release muscle tension, for example after a day at the desk.
  • Recovery: it is used by athletes and recovery centres after physical activity.

PEMF and far infrared together

The warmth of far infrared heats and relaxes deeply; pulsed fields work without heat. Used together, they make the session more complete. This is the principle behind Sauna Smarty Lumina, which integrates PEMF into the mat, and Smarty Belt, the flexible belt that brings the same technologies to the abdomen, hips or back.

When not to use it

Like all electromagnetic field devices, PEMF must not be used by people with pacemakers, defibrillators or other implanted electronic devices, during pregnancy.
